Who needs to complete a tax return?
There are many reasons you may need to complete a tax return with the most common being:
- Sole trader/Self-employed
- Company Director
- A Partner
- Annual income over £100,000
- If you receive child benefit and income is over £50,000
- Receive rental income
- Other untaxed income

Register with HMRC
If you have started a business HMRC request that you register as a self-employed person within 3 months of trading. We can take care of this process if you prefer.
FAQ’s
If your income is more than £1,000 then you will need to complete a UK tax return. There is a trading allowance for self-employed people of £1,000. This means that you will not need to do a UK tax return for this sole reason if your income is within this amount. More information on the trading allowance can be found on the HMRC website.
Yes a UK landlord can also claim the allowance. It is designed for small self-employed businesses and landlords to be taken out of the UK tax return system due to their simplified affairs.
You are still entitled to the allowance (read the information on the HMRC link above). However, you will need to complete a tax return to report your business or rental income to HMRC.
HMRC requests that all UK directors complete a self-assessment tax return. If you do not receive any untaxed income then it is possible for you to seek permission from HMRC to not file an annual tax return.
Yes if you are self-employed and your turnover is greater than £1,000 you will need to complete a tax return. You may need to complete a set of accounts or an income and expenditure account (profit and loss for your business) in order to be able to accurately complete your tax return.
This depends on what sources of income you have. If you are a landlord with property income or you are self-employed either as a sole trader or in a partnership then you will be able to claim any relevant expenses that are wholly and exclusively for business purposes.
