Moving with the times?

I see many different types of business clients through my fortunate position of being an accountant. It is one of the perks of this role, to get a fabulous insight into businesses like no other career can offer. As a result I see trends. I see similarities and differences between sectors and how people run their business.
There is no single way of running a small local business or small national business for that matter (such as a freelancer). However, in some markets it can be vital that you keep an eye on your competition. A business owner once famously told me he didn’t think he had any competitors! As much as we all like to think our business is great and our customers adore us you need to keep one eye on the competition.
Not only do you need to be a bit ‘noesy’ with ABC Cheltenham Ltd up the road, you also need to have an active interest in your profession and how technology is changing it. For instance, the birth of online and websites has truly changed the landscape of business.
While this may not be fundamental to a small car mechanic business that gets most of its work from word of mouth (which is a fantastic marketing model) it could be a deal breaker for a distance selling retailer, such as an Ebay shop. Having a website and a strong online profile could bring customers direct to your website rather than through Ebay first who will take a hansom ransom, (cough) I mean commission for the pleasure.
